What is the difference between a fruit and a vegetable?

Fruit- A fruit blooms from the flower of a plant and contains seeds.

Ex: Apples, Blueberries, Strawberries, Bananas

Vegetables- Vegetables come from the roots, stems, and leaves and have no seeds.

  • Ex: Kale, Carrots, Lettuce, Broccoli, Collard Greens

Did you know that tomatoes, bell peppers, and avocados are considered fruits botanically & not vegetables

Vegetable Classifications:

Bulbs- Grow shallowly beneath the soil. Bulbs are made of multiple layers

Flowers- Edible flower portion of vegetables

Fruits- Vegetables that contains seeds

Fungi- Mushrooms

Leaves- Edibles leaves of plants

Roots- Plants that have edible roots

Seeds- Edible seeds of plants which are grown in pods

Stems- Edible stalk of the plants, stems always grow above the ground

Tubers- Edible portion of plant grows on top of the root

Simple Fruit Classifications:

Simple Fruit- Fruit that has developed from a single flower

Multiple Fruits- Fruits from different flowers that develop close together to form one big fruit.

Aggregate Fruits- Fruit that is produced from a single flower. The flower produces many tiny fruits held close together

The actual fruit of the strawberry  are the seeds not the flesh.

Fruit Classifications:

Achene- A small dry fruit with a single seed attached to the fruit wall

Berry- Fleshy fruit containing multiple seeds. Berries do not contain pits and the outside can be soft, hard, or leathery

Drupe- A fleshy fruit with a hard pit inside that contains the seed. Outside of drupes are soft most often

Legume- A dry fruit that has a pod, but open along two seams containing multiple seeds

Pome- A fleshy fruit with a thin skin, and a tough center core that holds the fruits seeds

Did you know that legumes (beans) are considered fruits.
